Grêmio and Lanús begin this Wednesday, November 22, to decide the 2017 edition of the Copa Libertadores of America. At the Grêmio Arena, in Porto Alegre, the game starts scheduled for 21:45 (Brasília time).
The second decisive game will be held next Wednesday, November 29, in Buenos Aires. Contrary to what happened in previous steps, the away goal will not be used as a tiebreaker in the decision. Thus, in case of equality in the number of points won and in the balance of goals taking into account the two matches, the decision will be made through charges of penalties.

Grêmio’s recent performance

With the conquest of America as their number one priority throughout the season, Grêmio sent a completely reserve team to face Santos on Sunday, November 19, for the Brazilian Championship. Not even coach Renato Gaucho took the trouble to travel to the game at Vila Belmiro and watch his team be defeated by 1 to 0.
Although this strategy has been criticized on previous occasions, which ended up causing the team to have a chance to play the reduced national title, this time there was no question.
After all, with 61 points (18 wins, seven draws and 11 losses), Grêmio achieved the goal of reaching a direct place in the group stage of the 2018 version of Libertadores through the Brasileirão. However, the team certainly does not want to use that right preferring to qualify for the next edition of the continental tournament by winning that year’s race.
The Guarmista campaign in Libertadores began with a quiet classification of the club as first place in Group 8. The gauchos had 13 points (four wins, one draw and one defeat) and had the second best attack of the first phase with 15 goals in six matches. Only Atletico-MG (17 goals) got top offensive performance.
In the last 16, Grêmio had Godoy Cruz, from Argentina, ahead. He won in Buenos Aires 1-0 and completed the service by scoring 2-1 in Porto Alegre.
The next victim was Botafogo. The gauchos got the goalless draw in Rio de Janeiro and, in the decision, asserted the field command scoring 1 to 0.
The home invincibility was lost in the semifinals. After beating Barcelona 3-0 in Guayaquil, the tricolor Gaucho made just enough to manage their advantage and advanced to a 1-0 defeat.
In all 12 games played over the course of the competition, Grêmio had eight wins, two draws and two losses. It presents the second best attack (22 goals) and the defense less leaked (eight times).

The current form of Lanús
The Lanús campaign in the cold of numbers is much more modest. It was six wins, two draws and four losses. However, it includes two important turns, one of them epic.
It was in the semifinals against River Plate, also from Argentina. Lanus lost the first leg to 1-0, losing to 2-0 with a 2-0 win. However, they managed to make it 4-2 with a right-hand goal in the closing seconds on a penalty kick after much controversy and use of the video referee.
In the quarterfinals, similar situation was experienced in another local duel. The Lanús took 2 to 0 of the San Lorenzo. In La Fortaleza, he returned the result. He secured the classification by winning the decision on penalties.
The classification in the last 16 did not have so great scares, but it was not the quietest either. The field command was decisive. After drawing 1-1 with the Bolivians of The Strongest, the Argentines, at home, scored 1-0.
Tranquility even the club only had in the first phase, when it reached the first place of the group 7 when adding 13 points (four victories, a tie and a defeat). Even so, he counted on the collaboration of Chapecoense’s top men. The Santa Catarina side defeated the Argentines in their 2-1 home stadium, but the result was reverted to 3-0 in favor of Lanús because the Brazilian team irregularly scaled defender Luis Otávio.
The success in Libertadores has made Lanús put the Argentine Championship in the background. He was defeated in the last three games. On Saturday, November 18, he took 3 to 0 of Defense and Justice. Thus, with 17 points (four wins and five losses), he occupies a modest seventeenth place.

History of the matches
This will be the first match involving the clubs.

Lanús has been very shy when he is away from home. His biggest goal has not been victory, but to achieve a result that allows the team to have real chances of success in La Fortaleza. Thus, in front of a Grêmio better technically, the gauchos guess is the best option with a price of 1.57 in Bet365. Draw shows return of 3.50 and success of Argentines in Porto Alegre multiplies the investment by 7.00.
